Property Tax Reform Issue Heating Up Again In Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - The issue of property tax reform is gaining momentum again in the state capitol, but faces the same hurdles that have stymied change for decades.
Protesters came to the capitol to rally Monday for property tax reform and there are once again several proposals on the issue before lawmakers.
One of those bills, a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would double the amount of property tax relief currently allowed for homeowners, passed the House last week.
But, Erik Arneson, spokesman for the Senate majority leader, says while the Senate may consider that bill, it won't likely have a major impact until there's agreement on the bigger problem.
"Beyond that, at this point, there does not seem to be any consensus on how to replace property tax revenue broadly."
That agreement on what formula for sales or income tax increases that will pay for property tax relief is what eluded lawmakers the last time there was a serious focus on the issue a few years ago.
