Princeton U. Students Taking Meningitis Vaccination Plan In Stride
By David Madden
PRINCETON, N.J. (CBS) -- Princeton University will make available to students next month a meningitis vaccine that needed special approval by federal officials, because it is not approved for use in the United States.
But if there is any real concern among students on the campus, it would be hard to tell from talking to them.
Most say the issue never got a lot of attention until talk of using the vaccine Bexsero became fodder for the news media.
Jonathan Tannen, who is from Philadelphia, says he plans to take the shot when it's made available next month.
"It's been approved by, presumably, organizations in Europe that have done their research, and it has been okayed by the CDC," he notes.
But the CDC approval is only for this outbreak because more popular treatments have not worked. Seven students have come down with the disease. All but the latest victim have since recovered.
University officials are working on the logistics of distributing the vaccine to those who need or want it.
