Pres. Obama's Twitter Account Draws Out The Usual Trolls

By social media editor Melony Roy

NEW YORK, N.Y. (CBS) -- President Obama broke the record for the fastest time to reach one million followers on Twitter, after his new verified account, @POTUS (President Of The United States), reached that figure in less than five hours.

In the meantime, you may want to think long and hard before you actually hit "send" on that comment you want to post in response to one of the president's tweets.

Shortly after Pres. Obama joined Twitter, dozens of other users began tweeting him sex jokes, threats, racial slurs, and other unmentionable things.

But the joke may be on them.  The Internet is an über-efficient archival tool and, according to the White House and a warning on the @POTUS Twitter page, all tweets sent to or from this official government account are archived.

So, when you tweet "Leave Michelle for me @POTUS," or "You wanna smoke a blunt and listen to Kanye, @POTUS?," remember that your comment will live in an official White House archive for eternity.

You should also keep in mind that the US Secret Service monitors Twitter for threats.  And this isn't just a White House policy with Twitter:  the same principle applies to most social networks, including Facebook.  And even your Google searches can be archived and potentially subpoenaed in court.
