PPA To Host Live Stop Seminar

(CBS) - Police chiefs in the Philadelphia suburbs have been invited to a mid-month seminar by the Philadelphia Parking Authority to learn how to do Live Stop.

Live Stop car impoundments due to drivers with invalid registration or insurance had been solely the province of the city but now the Pennsylvania suburbs can voluntarily take part.  PPA executive director Vince Fennerty said the city has 260,000 vehicles worth of experience to share with suburban police:

"The aim of it is, is to make 'em legal.  How do you make them legal, impound their car, force them in front of the local district justice to get their license and registration straightened out.  I"m not saying we'll be Big Brother but we have a wealth of information.  We'd like to share it."

Fenerty said the goal is to bring those violators into compliance, and losing their wheels has proven mighty pursuasive.

"Unfortunately, if you don't have a Live Stop program, okay, your police officers can be very vigilant.  They can give out the proper citations.  They drive away.  The violator drives away also."
