Power Outage Reported, Section Of Ocean Drive Closed Following Accident In Avalon
AVALON, N.J., (CBS) – A power outage has been reported and a section of Ocean Drive is closed Friday following an accident in Avalon, New Jersey.
According to Avalon Borough's website, shortly before 3:30 p.m. an accident involving a tractor trailer resulted in the destruction of four utility poles at 15th Street and Ocean Drive. The borough says all of the poles were destroyed along with the power transformers.
The resulting power outage has affected 1,400 customers, largely in the vicinity of Ocean Drive in the northern section of Avalon.
Atlantic City Electric reports that the number of outages are now reduced to just under 200 customers. According to the borough, customers will remain without power from the vicinity of 16th Street north to the Townsend's Inlet Bridge along and between Ocean Drive and Dune Drive. Some outages in the immediate area of the accident at 15th Street and Ocean Drive will likely remain without power into the overnight hours.
Atlantic City Electric is on the scene and will restore electricity as quickly as possible. For areas immediately adjacent to the accident scene, the borough says it is likely that the power outage will last through the night into Saturday morning.
For other areas without power, the outage may last several hours into the evening hours.
In addition, the Avalon Office of Emergency Management reports that Ocean Drive between 13th Street and 16th Street will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic until at least Saturday morning as new poles and transformers are placed into service.
