Post-Sandy, Atlantic City Reports An Increase In Burglaries
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (CBS) – Atlantic City is reporting an increase in burglaries following Hurricane Sandy.
On Monday, Oct. 29 at 11:20 p.m., two men were arrested in the parking lot of the Save-A-Lot grocery store in Renaissance Plaza. They were identified as Richard Jackson, 27, and Jordan Frazier, 20, both of Atlantic City.
The following day, officers responded to calls about a group of people taking things from a store on Pacific Avenue. Officers found the door to the Zias Deli had been forced open, and a witness said that a group of men had loaded up a blue Durango and drove away eastbound on Pacific Avenue. Police were able to locate the vehicle, which had items from the store inside. The following were arrested and charged with Burglary and Theft: Robert Kelsey, 48 years of age, of Atlantic City; Kevin Beck, 41 years of age, of Pleasantville; Brian Shepperson, 35 years of age, of Mays Landing; Kelli Forrest, 27 years of age, of Atlantic City.
Also on Tuesday, police responded to Georgia and Fairmount Avenues for reports of a man on a bike breaking into vehicles. He was located in the process of doing that and identified as Rodney Stewart, 44, of Atlantic City.
Finally, police arrested Miriam Murcau, 32, of Atco, for allegedly breaking into 3818 Ventnor Avenue.
Atlantic City police also say there have been numerous calls about break-ins and burglaries during the timeframe of the mandatory evacuation due to Hurricane Sandy. Police have increased their patrols, and a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. remains in effect.
