Possible Tornado, Large Hail Hits Western Pennsylvania
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Authorities in western Pennsylvania say a possible tornado has caused roof damage and large hail has been reported from a springtime storm that also dumped snow on parts of the commonwealth.
Meteorologist-in-charge Rich Kane of the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh says after a tornado warning, forecasters were told at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday that several roofs had blown off along Route 136 in Westmoreland County's Hempfield Township.
Damage was also reported to the local high school. Kane says officials plan to go out Thursday to confirm that a tornado touched down.
Kane says golf-ball-sized or quarter-sized hail was reported in many areas, and hail with a diameter of two inches fell in McKeesport.
The storm prompted school closings and delays and brought nine inches of snow to Monroe County.
