Positively Philadelphia: Something For Everyone From The Philadelphia Orchestra

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Orchestra is ready to kick off its new season.
"We open the season this year by presenting the original film of 'West Side Story,' " says Jeremy Rothman, the orchestra's vice president for artistic planning, "-- the full score performed live by the Philadelphia Orchestra while seeing this great film displayed in the hall above the orchestra. It's a wonderful combination of seeing this incredible film and the cast who will be singing along with the live orchestra, the sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra playing this remarkable score."
And, Rothman says, there is plenty more.
"We offer five family concerts every year. We touch on a variety of different topics and themes. We do the Beethoven program, there is an opportunity to come in and hear the world of percussion. The Cowboys and Caballeros, with Jamie Bernstein, and great music of all these American composers like Aaron Copeland, like Leonard Bernstein."
And don't forget the holidays are coming!
"We are presenting family concert right around the holidays," Rothman tells KYW Newsradio. "We do an annual performance of Handel's 'Messiah.' We offer three performances called 'The Glorious Sound of Christmas.' We ring in the New Year with a New Year's Eve concert just before midnight, and this year our new music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, will be in Philadelphia conducting the orchestra on New Year's Eve, his first year as music director, to help ring in 2013!"
