Positively Philadelphia: Flag Day Festivities

By Lauren Lipton

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Flag Day is coming up, and you're invited to a big bash!

"Saturday, June 14th, we're going be hosting what we call the 'Philadelphia Stripes and Stars Festival,' which is actually honoring the birthday of two great institutions: the flag and the US Army, both which were born here in Philadelphia."

Lauren Saul (top photo) is with the National Constitution Center.

"It'll be a daylong event," she tells Positively Philadelphia.  "We'll start at the Betsy Ross House at 9:30am with a thirteen-star flag raising, then we'll come over to the Constitution Center front lawn for the fifty-star flag raising."

She says there will be plenty of activities for the kids...

"The Betsy Ross House will be having jugglers, musical performances. At the Constitution Center, tons of craft activities, design their own flags."

And lots of music...

"We're going to have the Fife and Drum Corps performances. That evening, at about 5:30, we're going to have the brass quintet from the US Army do a performance on the lawn."

And, she says, you can take part!

"The Star-Spangled Banner (national anthem) is also celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, so we're going to be doing a singalong at 4 o'clock on the Constitution Center front lawn, where everyone can come and sing.  And this is a nationwide thing that the Smithsonian is spearheading.  They're asking everyone, at 4 o'clock on June 14th, to sing the national anthem."
