Positively Philadelphia: A Brooklyn Flea Market Hops To Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's known all over, and now the "Brooklyn Flea" is expanding out of New York for the first time -- and it's coming to Philadelphia!
Co-founders Eric Demby and Jonathan Butler are setting up a weekly flea market, "Brooklyn Flea Philly," beginning June 2nd and continuing every Sunday at the Piazza at Schmidt's in Northern Liberties.
"There's a very big creative community, entrepreneurial spirit. And in particular the Northern Liberties area, it feels like there's a lot of action percolating there, ready to happen," Butler tells Positively Philadelphia. "And we want to be a part of that."
The market features top vendors of antiques and collectibles, as well as jewelry, art, and crafts from local artists whom Demby and Butler say are top-notch.
"The core of our market, like the vintage and antiques vendors, I actually think there's a higher quality of vendor in the Philly market than there is even in our Brooklyn market," Denby says.
The food at the Brooklyn flea markets has become such a big thing that there are now two flea markets that do just food. And vendors from New York will join local vendors here.
"The Red Hook Lobster Pound, which has sort of become famous at our market for serving both a Connecticut and a Maine lobster roll -- so they have a mayonnaise version and a butter version; one's hot, one's cold -- they're making the trek down," says Demby. "Mighty Quinn, who's become famous for his smoked brisket, is gonna bring this giant smoker. Paisano's is going to set up a stand. The Nomad Pizza truck has a pizza oven on the back of a 1949 REO Speed Wagon truck."
"One of the great things that happened around the Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg here in Brooklyn is that it's really like a great family outing, even if you're not in the market for a new set of drawers or something," Butler says.
