Poll Suggests Many NJ Families Cut Back On Shore Trips This Summer

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)--A newly released poll suggests many New Jersey families cut back on their trips down the shore, in spite of a 13 million dollar publicity campaign seeking to boost tourism in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The survey of almost 800 state residents conducted just after Labor Day by Monmouth University found 38 percent of families cut back on shore vacations this summer, in spite of that "Stronger Than The Storm" campaign.
Poll Director Patrick Murray suggests the weather also played a role, and he can't say for sure if that campaign was a failure.
"All we know is that it didn't have a 100% success, meaning there will still some people out there who felt that things were going to be closed down the shore and that's a part of what kept them away this year," Murray says.
Not so much those who actually stayed in those shore towns, rather, Murray says it was day trippers who weren't taking that drive as often as they otherwise might.
State tourism officials did not return calls seeking a reaction to the survey.
