Police Use Cell Phone To Set Up Montgomery County Inmate
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - Montgomery County authorities say a cell phone placed behind the walls of the county prison led them to a convicted felon who is now charged in connection with a Norristown murder in October.
Detectives snuck a cell phone into the county jail as part of another investigation, but it led authorities to Bruce Woods Jr. The 26-year-old man (in photo above) is now charged with murder and related offenses accused of executing 34-year-old Tyree Whiting during what police believe was a robbery.
First Assistant DA Kevin Steele says Woods got his hands on the wiretapped phone and implicated himself in the murder.
"He was speaking to an individual who had a subpoena to testify," Steele said. "He was asking her to lie about what she knew."
Steele says investigators had suspected Woods was involved in the killing, but the phone conversation gave them what they needed for the murder charge. Steele says Woods has a long criminal history and he walked away from a halfway house in Philadelphia over the summer.
