Police: Thieves In Philadelphia Target UPS, FedEx Delivery Trucks

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There's a warning for anyone who is delivering or who is expecting a package in Philadelphia.

Police sources say thieves are on the loose stealing the packages right off the trucks.

According to sources, it's happening in Southwest Philadelphia and police are on alert.

Sources say it happened twice this month. The first incident was reported on November 1 in the 400 block of 53rd Street. A UPS driver told police as he got out of his truck, a green car pulled up behind him and then a man confronted him with a gun. The suspect got away with three packages from that truck.

Two days later, in the 5400 block of Chestnut Street, a FedEx driver reported to police he was confronted by a man with a gun. When the driver told him there's nothing in the truck, the suspect took the driver's wallet and cell phone.

Both robberies occurred in broad daylight, less than a mile from one another. In both cases, the suspect got away in a green sedan with a getaway driver. The two suspects are described as black males in their 20s, about 6 foot tall and at the time, wearing dark clothing.

Police suspect there is a pattern and sources say the suspects involved are likely targeting delivery trucks, hoping to steal something of value that can be re-sold.

Sources say police informed UPS and FedEx of the two incidents and patrol officers are on the lookout.

In the event your package gets lost or stolen, both agencies have steps in place to help you file a claim.
