Police: Teen Suspects Jump Into Brandywine River Following Chase
WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) - Three teenage suspects involved in a car theft in Delaware Friday morning were injured after they jumped into the Brandywine River in attempt to escape police, according to authorities.
Police say at about 10 a.m., four teenagers stole a woman's car that was left unattended and running at her home in the 300 block of East 24th Street.
At about 11:15 a.m., two officers saw the blue 2005 Pontiac G6, with four people inside, driving in the West Center City neighborhood.
When the officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled and later rammed into a patrol car, with two officers inside, on the Van Buren Street Bridge.
Unable to continue driving, the teens ran away from the vehicle; three of them, including the driver, jumped into the river, police said. The teens quickly surrendered after police say they couldn't take the cold temperatures of the water.
The fourth suspect fled on foot and was later arrested after a brief struggle with police. Police say the 17-year-old, 15-year-old and 13-year-old boys are all charged with resisting arrest. Another 13-year-old boy is charged with theft, reckless endangering, traffic charges, as well as resisting arrest.
Police say the injured teens were taken to Wilmington Hospital for treatment and released to police custody. They are being held pending arraignment.
The officers were uninjured in the crash.
