Police: Speeding Erratic Driver Causes Apartment Building Evacuations, Shuts Down Roadway
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) --- Police say a driver speeding in a parking lot struck vehicles and broke a gas line to a nearby apartment in Gloucester Township on Wednesday.
Just after midnight, police say they received a report of an erratic driver near the Black Horse Pike and Church Street. When police arrived, they say a vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed in the rear parking lot of the Palace Caterers.
When the driver exited the vehicle, he had to be restrained by officers, who said he was acting erratically. Gloucester Township emergency medical services also responded to help stabilize the driver. Police say he appeared to be in medical distress.
Police say the driver struck and broke light standards, vehicles, and a gas line to a nearby apartment building on the Black Horse Pike.
Two apartment building in total had to be evacuated for about an hour while police, fire, and gas company workers investigated.
During the incident, the Black Horse Pike was closed for about an hour and a half.
Police say the driver's name is not being released pending further investigation. He was treated at the scene and later released.
