Police: Shoplifter Fleeing Security Struck, Killed On Highway
READING, Pa. (AP) — Police say a Pennsylvania man fleeing from store security after shoplifting was struck and killed when he ran onto a highway.
Investigators haven't released the name of the 22-year-old man hit Thursday by a two cars on Route 222 in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County.
Muhlenberg Township police say the man was trying to steal three pairs of jeans from a Wal-Mart when he was stopped in the lobby of the store. The man ran from store security, crossed a parking lot and then ran on to the highway. Police Officer Samuel Calabria says the motorists had no time to react.
Authorities say the security guards had followed the man but were not running after him.
The man was pronounced dead at a hospital.
