UPPER DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) - Police officers shot a man wielding an axe inside an Upper Darby Township home Monday morning. The man is in critical condition.
When police arrived at the home in the 2400-block of Greenhill Road, a woman came to the door wondering why all the police were showing up. The cops told her the 911 call came from inside her home.
Police in Upper Darby Township say her 19-year-old son threatened to kill his mom, his brother and then himself.
The mom and brother were told to get out of the house. As police entered the pitch-black home, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says the 19-year-old charged out of a closet, swinging an axe.
"He was laying in ambush. He obviously planned it out."
Chitwood says an officer was his by the axe, but not by the blade. That officer is okay, but police did fire two shots at the man. He's now in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
