Iguana Found At Delco Rita's Water Ice Returned To Owner

COLLINGDALE, Pa. (CBS) -- Police say a pet iguana that was found at a Rita's Water Ice in Collingdale has been reunited with its owner.

The iguana was found Tuesday on the 400 block of MacDade Boulevard at the Rita's Water Ice around 3 p.m.

The four-foot-long iguana found sunbathing in a Rita's Water Ice parking lot wasn't exactly the call Collingdale Police Chief Robert Adams was expecting Tuesday afternoon.

"And I asked him to repeat it and he kind of jokingly said 'found iguana,' and my officers know my phobia with reptiles," said Chief Adams.

Rita's was closed but two women walking saw the lizard eating a pumpkin and hanging out in a grassy area.

They called police who called the Glenolden Animal Hospital. The iguana gave employees there the runaround escaping several times -- a video shows them trying to capture the lizard who eventually got caught in a nearby fence.

"So it kind of got itself wedged and she had it by the body, not the tail, and then the other kid went around the other side of the fence, the other technician with the gloves on and they kind of wiggled it enough to get it loose enough out," said Chief Adams.

After several minutes they had the quick and crafty creature in custody.

It was brought to the animal hospital for observation.

Police say the owner contacted the animal hospital and told them their pet had been missing for several days and they had been searching the area for the missing iguana, but they never thought to call police.

Authorities say they will interviewing the owner to determine if the pet is properly kept, according to Borough Ordinances.
