2 Suspects Behind Bars, 2 Still On the Run After Police Pursuit Ends Near Sports Complex In South Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Two suspects are now behind bars after a police pursuit that started in Delaware County Thursday night ended near the sports complex in South Philadelphia.
Investigators say it all started as a retail theft at a Home Depot in Ridley Township off MacDade Boulevard where several thousands dollars worth of power tools were stolen.
According to investigators, Tinicum Township Police spotted a Dodge minivan carrying four suspects thought to be involved traveling north on I-95 near Philadelphia International Airport.
A pursuit ensued, winding around off I-95 north to Columbus Boulevard and weaving around South Philadelphia.
Investigators say the minivan eventually traveled west on Terminal Avenue, striking a cab that was going north on the 3400 block of Broad Street.
The cab driver and two passengers, a husband and wife, were not injured.
Tinicum Township Police continued following the minivan west on Terminal Avenue. Investigators say the minivan then struck a one way sign, jumped onto the curb, and came to rest just south of the stadiums at Broad Street near the I-95 off ramp.
The Philadelphia Flyers were playing against the Montreal Canadiens at the Wells Fargo Center at the time of the incident.
"This all happened a little after 8:30 p.m. We have a Flyers game, there's normally a lot of traffic on South Broad Street right by the entrance of the Navy Yard, it's a busy intersection," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
According to Small, a Tinicum Township police officer accidentally discharge his weapon one time while exiting his police vehicle to make an apprehension. No one was struck.
Two suspects are still at large.
