Police: New Jersey Man Uses Counterfeit Money To Purchase Gift Cards For Valentine's Day
MEDFORD TWP., N.J. (CBS) - Medford Township Police hope someone recognizes the man caught on surveillance video at the CVS store on Route 70 at Hartford Road Saturday night around 9:30.
He spent $600 on Footlocker, Bloomingdale's and American Express gift cards using counterfeit 10 dollar bills.
"They're copies of 10 dollar bills, three different serial numbers so the majority of them are all identical but have the feel of regular paper," said Medford Township Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Wagner.
The clerk, who police say thought the bills felt funny, asked the man why he was buying so many gift cards. He reportedly said for Valentine's Day. When the man left the store the clerk checked the money again and called a manager.
Wagner says the man did not act suspicious.
"Watching video from the store, he calmly goes up to clerk and hands her his money in two transactions. I think he was trying to spread it out and she if she questioned the first three hundred," said Wagner.
Police have contacted the United States Secret Service to determine if the problem is localized or spread throughout the region. If you know the man in the blue Nike hooded sweatshirt, you are asked to call the Medford Township Police Department at 609-654-7511.
If you received a gift card from him, police are now working with the Card Companies to see if they can be tracked.
