Police: Motorcyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run In Feltonville
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are investigating after they say a hit-and-run driver killed a motorcyclist in Feltonville.
Authorities followed a trail that led them to the striking vehicle.
Police say the driver of the vehicle may be at large, but they left a lot of clues behind.
The 58-year-old motorcyclist died as a result of the crash at the corner of Whitaker Avenue and Louden Street.
The impact was so strong police say the man's body was thrown about 30 feet.
Police are searching for the driver of an SUV.
Chief Inspector Scott Small says the driver, "Made a left turn into the path of the motorcyclist that was going south, and that's where the motorcycle and this GMC collided."
Fast-acting police with the 25th District tracked down the striking SUV from the scene to the 5000 block of Rorer Street.
Officers followed the trail of leaking antifreeze and motor oil for five blocks.
"That GMC had heavy front end damage, both air bags deployed, and they were able to follow the trail of fluid to the location," says Small.
Police say the driver and license plate were gone, but investigators have possible fingerprints, DNA and a VIN to help track down the person behind the wheel.
"Since we don't have a license plate we're using the Vehicle Identification Number. We're pretty confident working with our PCIC, as well at the state police, we'll be able to identify the registered owner."
Police have not yet released the name of the victim.
