Police: Man Shot By Off-Duty Officer During Fight Over Dog Waste ID'd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police say a man was shot by an off-duty officer during a fight that escalated from an argument over dog waste in Northeast Philadelphia.
It happened shortly before noon Saturday in the 6400 block of Oakley Street in the city's Lawncrest section.
Philadelphia Police say an off-duty officer was outside working on his car when 39-year-old Jordan Lunsk was walking his dog past the officer's home. According to police, the dog defecated on the officer's front yard and the officer then asked Lunsk to pick it up.
Lunsk and the officer then exchanged words and then he left the area.
Police say Lunsk returned a few minutes later without his dog and approached the officer. According to police, he and the officer then became engaged in a physical altercation, during which time the officer was punched several times in the face and head. Lunsk, police say, then pulled the officer's hooded sweatshirt up over the officer's head so that it covered his face, while he continued to assault the officer.
During this part of the fight, police say the officer was bent over and Lunsk was behind him, assaulting him. Police say the officer drew his Glock pistol, which he had in a holster on his hip, and fired backward, striking him in the right thigh.
Lunsk was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
The officer was taken to Jeanes Hospital, where he was treated for facial lacerations and bruises, and released.
The incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs and will be reviewed by the District Attorney's Office.
The officer will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
According to police, Lunsk has three priors. including two burglaries and a DUI. He has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Criminal Trespassing, Simple Assault, and related offenses.
