By Elizabeth Hur
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Police made a gruesome discovery early Sunday morning inside a home in Oxford Circle. A Philadelphia man is in police custody after his brother's body was found beaten and wrapped up in the basement.
Homicide detectives say murder charges have been filed, news which has stunned the people living in the neighborhood where the body was found.
"It's very sad, very sad," said one woman who lives nearby.
"They are good people," said another neighbor, Cezar Goncalves.
Neighbors said they were surprised to see police and paramedics swarming around the home of the two brothers just after 12am on Sunday.
"I don't really know what happened out there," Goncalves said. "I just saw police around here last night."
Geremiah Alston lives nearby to the two brothers. "I think he was in the basement," he said. "He was in the basement somewhere and there were just detectives all over the block and it was crazy, scary."
Police sources confirmed that investigators found the body of Artur Figueiredo, 36, badly beaten and wrapped in sheets and packing material in the basement of the house.
Police say his brother Paulo Fiueiredo, 34, made the 911 call. Now, murder charges have been filed against him.
Neighbors say the brothers were close. "They were always together, they were close most of the time," said Alston. "I would doubt… that would be the last thing I would expect."
By all accounts the two brothers were quiet, polite, and pleasant.
According to neighbors, the victim's young daughter lived with him. "I feel very bad for her, his daughter," said Kaitlyn Beaulieu. "He was her all, the dad. I'm very sad for her."
Police sources tell Eyewitness News that it appears the victim was beaten with a baseball bat, and it is possible that he was killed days ago.
Police are waiting for the medical examiner's results before they release the cause and time of death.
As for now, there is no word on a motive.
