Cops: Driver Arrested In Salem County Hit-Run

PENNSVILLE, NJ (CBS) -- Police say an arrest has been made after a hit and run in Salem County left a teen fighting for his life.

Authorities say 17-year-old Kyle Pszenny was hit early Sunday morning on North Hook Road at Lee Avenue in Pennsville, Salem County.

Monday afternoon, police say they located the vehicle involved in the accident behind a multi-unit house on the corner of Hook and Orange Streets in Pennsville.

Eyewitness News learned the alleged driver turned himself in for questioning Monday afternoon.

Authorities say 23-year-old Zachary McDonough is charged with aggravated assault by auto after an alleged taped confession.

Chief Alan Cummings says, "He's giving full taped statement right now, he's upset, he realizes that he hurt somebody, but he was scared and didn't know what to do. That's what he told us."

Authorities say the student from Pennsville Memorial High School was riding his skateboard to see his girlfriend when he was struck by the car that allegedly did not stop.

His cousin, Cody McNiss, says,  "I'm at a loss for words. I don't really know what to think, I'm just shocked"

On Monday, the high school's principal said he received a call from the victim's mom and she said he is showing signs of forward progress where he has been reactive to both light and physical stimulus.

She added he has a long road toward recovery, but the progress he made overnight is 'good.'

Students at the victim's high school have organized a candlelight vigil in support of Pszenny's recovery. It will be held Tuesday, June 9th at 8 p.m. in Lou D'Angelo Stadium.
