Police Investigate Death Of 4-Year-Old Girl In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities are investigating the death of a four-year-old girl in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Eyewitness News is told early Tuesday morning, her mother rushed her to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where doctors, according to sources, found new and old bruises on the girl's face, neck and back. Sources tell Eyewitness News the girl was also suffering from internal bleeding. The injuries were so severe she later died.

The four-year-old lived in the 2200 block of South 56th Street.

Sources tell Eyewitness News the girl's mother and her boyfriend were questioned and released, pending the autopsy results.

Neighbors are stunned and surprised after learning the details of the girl's death.

"She's a little girl sitting outside, playing in the yard, that's it. Like any other child out there playing," said neighbor Patricia Schoolfield.

"It's sad, I don't know what else to say, it's sad," said neighbor Angie Foglio. "I feel very bad, it could be anybody's child."

"It makes me sick to my stomach because I have granddaughters, it makes me sick," said Schoolfield.

Late Tuesday, Eyewitness News learned from sources, the Medical Examiner has ruled on cause of death. We are told the 4-year-old died as a result of blunt force trauma to her abdomen.

Sources say homicide detectives are investigating along with DHS officials. At last check, we were told charges have not been filed as this investigation is continuing.
