2 Dead, Teen & Police Officer Wounded In Bucks County, Pa.
NORTHAMPTON, Pa., (CBS) – Gunfire erupted in Bucks County Thursday evening.
Investigators say a man who was killed by police, killed his ex-wife. That woman's daughter and a Northampton Township police officer were also injured.
Bullet casings, a shotgun on the ground and the suspect's body was visible at the scene in the usually quiet neighborhood of Holland in Northampton Township.
"All of the sudden, I heard like 15 shots," said Thomas Faunce.
"I heard the cop yelling," commented Jon Millar. "There were about three people under their trucks, lying under their cars in the parking lot. They didn't know what was going on. There were people freaking out and crying."
Police say the chaos started at about 5:50 p.m. in the 300 block of Bustleton Pike in Lower Southampton Township.
Police say 50-year-old Kenneth Phillip of Feasterville followed his ex-wife and her 16-year-old daughter to a dress store and fired several shots inside the car they were in.
"The mother was deceased at the scene," said Lower Southampton Township Chief William Wiegman. "The daughter was taken to St. Mary's hospital."
She suffered an injury to her hand and is expected to be okay.
Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler says Phillip had just got out of county prison a few weeks ago, for a crime related to violent act against the victim.
"Certainly I believe, she was involved in the case for which he spent time in jail," said Heckler.
After killing his ex-wife and injuring her daughter, Phillip sped away. At around 6 p.m. a police officer in Northampton Township noticed the suspicious vehicle and followed behind him. But before back up arrived, Phillip got out of his car and fired at the officer.
"The officer was able to get out of the police car, return fire and end the situation," said Northampton Township Police Lt. Michael Clark.
The officer, who was struck in the chest, was wearing a bullet proof vest. Police say the officer is a nine year veteran. He will be placed on administrative leave.
