Argument Turns Deadly Inside South Philadelphia Home

By Al Novack, Steve Beck, Dray Clark

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One man is dead and another is in critical condition after a violent argument in South Philadelphia early Wednesday morning.

The deadly incident happened at about 3 a.m. inside a home in the 400 block of Dudley Street in the Pennsport section.

Investigators say a 39-year-old homeowner got into an argument with another man inside the home.

Authorities say the homeowner was armed with a knife and the second individual involved in the altercation had a hammer.

The altercation began as an argument and escalated into a full-blown fight. During the fight, investigators say the homeowner stabbed the second man. That man ran from the home and eventually collapsed at 4th and McKean Streets, where he was pronounced dead.

The homeowner was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said two young boys were inside the home and witnessed the entire incident. The children were not physically injured.

Detectives say they've been told the homeowner and the second man knew each other. It was not immediately known what led up to the deadly fight.

Investigators intend to question the 39-year-old homeowner.

The incident remains under investigation.
