Camden Police Express 'Serious Concerns' Over Latest Rape Allegations
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Just hours after police in Camden announced they were investigating reports of another sexual assault in the city, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office issued a statement saying that there were "serious concerns about the allegations of sexual assault that were reported," and a source confirmed to CBS 3 Eyewitness News that the woman may have made false accusations.
The alleged attack, which was reported on Wednesday afternoon, was originally thought to have been the fourth and latest in a string of assaults on women that have happened near Farnham Park in Camden.
But the prosecutor's office now says the latest account is being "reevaluated," and that further information will be made public on Thursday.
In the meantime, police continue to search for a suspect in the three earlier rapes. Earlier this week, the Camden County Prosecutor's office released the sketch of a man wanted in connection to those three assaults. He is described as a black man aged 20 to 30, approximately 5-feet-7-inches to six feet tall. The attacker was also described as wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, and the victims noted he had distinctively light brown eyes.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
