Christopher Alvelo, 17, tried to take control of the pickup truck his stepfather was driving after Joseph Snyder, 45, suffered a medical crisis that left him incapacitated.
Police say it happened near Northeast Philadelphia Airport.
Snyder was driving Alvelo and two 15-year-olds back home from an Eagle Scout community service project in Pennypack Park.
While driving, Snyder became ill. Alvelo grabbed the wheel and tried to steer the vehicle away from danger, but it slammed into the back of a parked paratransit bus.
Alvelo was killed. His stepfather was hospitalized in guarded condition.
The two passengers are stable and expected to survive.
