Police: Homeless Man Raped Pennsylvania Habitat Worker
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- A homeless man is jailed on charges he raped a woman while both were volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Online court records do not list an attorney for 44-year-old Herbert Conaway, who faces a preliminary hearing Tuesday on rape and indecent assault charges.
The woman told Uniontown police that Conaway attacked her in a warehouse where the local Habitat chapter was relocating on Thursday. Police say Conaway led the woman to an upstairs office where he locked a door and assaulted the woman.
The agency's volunteer executive director in Uniontown, Jackie Shrum, says Conaway had volunteered with the agency years ago and asked to do so when he returned from Florida about a month ago.
Shrum says the incident may prompt the agency to consider rules about leaving male and female volunteers alone together.
