Police: Handgun Found In 13-Year-Old Student's Backpack In Wilmington
WILMINGTON, Del., (CBS) – Police say teachers found an unloaded handgun in a 13-year-old student's backpack Thursday morning in Wilmington.
The incident happened at about 9:50 a.m. at the P.S. DuPont Middle School, located at the 700 block of W. 34th Street.
According to police, students told their teachers that they saw the student walking to school with a handgun. The student did not make any threats towards other students or staff.
When the students arrived to class, they notified their teacher who contacted the school administration.
Police say the student was already in the school's administration offices when he was approached by staff who searched his backpack and located the weapon. The staff immediately contacted police who responded to the school.
Authorities say an initial investigation indicates that the student brought the handgun to show off to friends and believed that the handgun was actually a BB gun.
Police say the student did not make any statements or threats indicating that he intended to use the weapon. Authorities say no other students are involved in this incident and this does not appear to be a gang related activity.
Police are investigating how the student came to be in possession of the handgun.
School activity was not disrupted by this incident.
Authorities say the student is being held at police central pending arraignment.
