LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) – Police in Gloucester County say a domestic dispute Wednesday morning left a man dead and his girlfriend with a gunshot wound to the head.
Police were called to a home in the 100 block of Barker Avenue in Logan Township, New Jersey shortly before 2 a.m.
When police arrived, they found 48-year-old Thomas Gillespie dead of a gunshot wound to the head that authorities say was self-inflicted.
Investigators found his 47-year-old girlfriend in the family room with a gunshot wound to her head that investigators say Gillespie fired. She was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where she is listed in critical but stable condition.
Investigators believe Gillespie first fired one shot at his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.
A 38 cal. handgun believed to have been used in the shootings was recovered from the house.
Authorities say the woman was home with her daughters – a 13-year-old and 10-year-old from a previous marriage – when the incident happened. The girls were upstairs and were unharmed and are now with their biological father.
Gillespie and the woman, who had a three-year relationship, had no history of domestic violence.
The incident remains under police investigation.
