Police Dog Helps Find Missing Elderly Woman In Camden County
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) – A police dog in Camden County is being credited with helping to find a missing elderly woman early Thursday morning.
Gloucester Township Police say the 82-year-old, who suffers from dementia, wandered away from her home around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Police Officer Jim Clark and his K-9 partner "Nero" began an extensive search of the area for the woman. Eventually Officer Clark and "Nero" found the woman curled up on the ground about a quarter of a mile from her home at about 2 a.m.
The woman was conscious, but she was lost and confused. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia. She is expected to make a full recovery.
Officials with the Gloucester Township Police Department say the actions of the officers involved and "Nero" helped to avert a possible tragedy.
Nero is a 4-year-old German Shepherd that was born in the Czech Republic. Nero and Officer Clark graduated from the Camden County Police Academy Basis K-9 Training Class in 2008. Nero is trained in Patrol and Narcotics Detection.
Officer Clark has been a Gloucester Township Police Officer since 2005. He has been a K-9 Handler with Nero since July 2008. Officer Clark is an eight-year veteran of the United States Air Force Security Forces, and was a U.S. Air Force K-9 Handler for five years.
