Police Discover $10,000 Worth Of Marijuana In Delaware Home

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) - An assault investigation in Delaware lead police to find almost $10,000 worth of marijuana on Thursday.

Police were called out to a home in the 500 block of E. 10th Street at about 10:45 p.m. for a possible assault. When police arrived, they located the caller, 28-year-old William Grimes. Grimes, police say, became combative with officers and a brief struggle ensued. After Grimes was placed into police custody, the officers discovered injuries on his body.

Police at that time did not know whether the injuries came from the assault or whether other people were in the home. After receiving a warrant, police searched the home for suspects but instead found a large marijuana growing operation.

The officers secured the residence and contacted the drug and organized crime division for assistance. Twenty marijuana plants with a drug weight of 3.5 pounds and a street value of almost $10,000, lights, irrigation equipment and various documents were seized.

Further investigation linked the drug manufacturing and growing operation to a Brian K. Lafate, a 43-year-old East Side City resident. An arrest warrant is on file for Lafate for the charges of aggravated drug dealing and maintaining a Drug Property.

Grimes, who is recovering at Wilmington Hospital from assault injuries, is charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Anyone who has any information on Lafate or knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Michael Ballard of the Wilmington Police Department's Vice unit at 302-571-4495.
