Police Chase In Kensington Ends With Officers Ramming Into Stolen SUV
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A stolen vehicle, shots fired, and a woman hospitalized on Thursday night after a police chase in Kensington.
Police were just wrapping up a traffic stop with another vehicle at E and Clearfield Streets at about 9:30 when officers spotted a Jeep Cherokee going the wrong way on Clearfield.
Lt. John Stanford says the driver continued travelling recklessly toward police, and an officer fired once at the driver.
The woman in her 30's kept going until officers rammed the vehicle and ended the chase.
"She has an injury to her left hand. It's not clear at this point in time whether it was an injury that was sustained as a result of the gunshot wound or if it's an injury of the car accident."
The SUV was reported stolen earlier on Thursday, and authorities believe that's why the driver was trying to escape.
On Friday night, police identified the driver of the vehicle as Erika Avila, aka Erica Lopez, 33. Police say Avila was charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault, simple assault, theft-receiving stolen property and related offenses.
