Police Chase Ends In Northeast Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A burglary suspect was taken into custody after leading police on a chase that ended in Northeast Philadelphia Monday afternoon.
According to investigators, the suspect and an accomplice were wanted for multiple burglaries in Montgomery County.
Authorities say the suspects were spotted dumping pillow cases into trash cans behind the Bryn Mawr apartment complex in the city's Wynnefield section.
One of the suspects fled the scene. The second suspect, later identified as Derrick Carter, then fled in a black BMW and led police on a high-speed chase that went from I-676 to I-95.
Police say Carter got off of I-95 at the Cottman Avenue exit and eventually drove to a driveway behind the 4600 block of Sheffield Street. As he drove down the driveway, a female was spotted standing near an open garage. The car pulled into the garage and the female shut and locked the garage.
Dozens of officers swarmed outside the garage and they eventually used bolt cutters to open the garage. With guns drawn, officers opened the garage and Carter, according to police, was standing inside the garage and was taken into custody.
Police say the home belongs to the Carter's common law wife.
"I didn't know what he did, he never spoke to me, I waved, but they would just go about their business," said one neighbor.
Sources tell Eyewitness News, a warrant was just issued for his arrest Monday morning. Carter, according to sources, was a wanted man in multiple jurisdictions in at least two states: Pennsylvania and Delaware. Carter came on investigators' radar following his last arrest in Philadelphia in November, 2011.
More arrests are pending, according to police. The incident remains under investigation.
