Police Announce Surveillance Camera Registry Program In Lindenwold

LINDENWOLD, N.J., (CBS) -- Police are hoping to grab more leads and close more cases by enlisting the help of residents and merchants with surveillance cameras in Lindenwold.
"It's a free registration program of any camera that a business or residence has in town," says Chief Thomas Brennan.
The Citizen's Electronic Eye program rolled out this week and it encourages people with cameras to sign up so police can quickly find video when an incident occurs.
The camera owner will be notified by email or call about what's happened near them and when it happened so they can check their video and provide any footage to police.
"We build trust a little bit of trust with the community, have them be an extension of our eyes and ears and solve crimes a little more quickly," says Brennan.
"We also modeled our program after Sacramento Sheriff's Department Registry Program because they partnered with Public Engines' Crime Reports to create a registry that can be mapped in our Crime Mapping Program to make it easier to identify locations of cameras in the vicinity of where crimes occurred," says Captain Michael McCarthy.
Businesses and residents with security cameras are encouraged to sign up now.
