PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are investigating the stabbing deaths of a man and woman were found inside a South Philadelphia apartment Tuesday morning. In addition, investigators also say two small dogs were also found fatally stabbed.
The gruesome discovery was made just before 10 a.m. inside a first floor apartment in the 1300 block of Dickinson Street. Neighbors tell Eyewitness News the apartment seemed to always have random people going in and out.
"Strangers that aren't the neighborhood people," said one neighbor who wished to remain unidentified.
According to investigators, the bodies were found in the first floor apartment. Their throats appear to have been slashed, police said.
"There is no forced entry to the apartment, but we're not sure exactly what happened," says Lt. Ray Evers, Philadelphia Police. "It's a large crime scene and we'll be here for an extended period of time."
According to police, they believe the suspect or suspects attempted to light the apartment on fire by turning on the gas inside the unit, but a neighbor noticed the odor and contacted authorities. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and discovered the bodies.
"It was a very violent, violent attack," Captain James Clark explained.
According to police, the female is believed to be in her early 30s, and the male, 60-years-old. Clark said the younger victim was found in the living area as police entered the apartment. The older victim was found in a rear bathroom. Clark said the victims were not related.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey arrived on scene to survey the aftermath.
"We need to find the people responsible for this as quickly as possible, this is a pretty bad scene," said Ramsey.
So far, no arrests have been made and the motive is under investigation.
