Police ID Driver In Deadly Tacony Crash, Faces Charges Of DUI, Murder
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police say a driver is facing DUI charges after a crash that killed two people in Northeast Philadelphia early Thursday morning.
The accident happened shortly before 9 a.m. near the intersection of Ditman and Disston Streets in the city's Tacony section.
According to investigators, a red Camaro struck a second car, sending both vehicles onto the sidewalk. The vehicle that was struck caught fire due to the impact of the crash.
Several neighbors rushed out and tried to save the two occupants in the vehicle that was struck. However, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the victims was not immediately known.
After the crash, eyewitnesses said the driver of the Camaro was walking around in a panic and sobbing.
The driver, identified as George Vidra from the 7800 block of Lorna Drive, was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Once released from the hospital, authorities say he is expected to be charged with Driving Under the Influence and two-counts of the following Homicide by Vehicle, Homicide by Vehicle while DUI, Murder, and other related charges.
The deadly crash remains under police investigation.
