Driver Arrested In Pottstown Double Fatal Crash
POTTSTOWN, Pa. (CBS) – A driver has been apprehended after police say he fled the scene of a single-car crash in Montgomery County that left two people dead and a third critically injured.
The crash happened at about 11:29 p.m. Monday at 9th and State Streets in Pottstown.
Police say three occupants were killed after a car traveling south on State Street swerved off the road, went up on to a lawn and struck an oil tank.
Police say Rachael Witt, 15, and James Crawford, 28, both of Pottstown, were pronounced dead.
Kendell Harper, 16, also of Pottstown, is listed in critical condition at Reading Hospital with head trauma and internal injuries.
Police say the driver, 27-year-old Roger Tracey Malloy, and another man, ran from the scene. Malloy was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon and is facing charges of accident involving death and personal injury, accident involving death/personal injury while not properly licensed, driving without license and driving after suspended DUI. The other passenger, who has not been identified, is cooperating with authorities.
Neighbors who live near the accident scene are still processing what they saw.
"If you heard it, you would've thought a plane crashed. They were definitely speeding," said Jason Roman.
Residents who live along that stretch of road say they've seen multiple accidents and speed is often to blame.
"This road is really dangerous. They come down from Route 100, which is a hill. So, they gather speed, then they just keep on going," said neighbor Gail Gottshall.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
