Play Day: Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort
Quite often I find myself talking about how much I enjoy the atmosphere and history of Atlantic City Country Club. In a similar vein, but in another direction, I also love heading north and soaking in the same type of ambiance at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
The setting is fantastic, with mountains rising on each side, and water -- most of the holes are on an island in the Delaware River.
There are 27 holes there, and a few of them are from the original AW Tillinghast's design, believed to be his first. It hosted the 1938 PGA Championship, when Paul Runyan beat Sam Snead in the final. Shawnee is also where Arnold Palmer met his wife Winnie, and the resort down through the years was a favorite stop of big-name entertainers like Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope, and Fred Waring, the bandleader who also owned the place for more than 30 years.
One of the modern additions that helps set the resort apart is a 6-hole Chip & Putt course that was designed by golf architect Tom Doak. It is a nice place for novice golfers to get their feet wet, or for those more experienced to work on their short games. It is a nice touch whether you only have time for a little practice, or want to put in some enjoyable work after you play. It also has lights so you can stay out there until 10pm or so. Good times.
