Play Day: Radnor Valley
Every Wednesday on the golf blog we feature another place to play. Today it is a private club in Villanova -- Radnor Valley Country Club.
Radnor Valley is the quintessential country club, complete with a stately clubhouse, pool and even indoor tennis. The golf course more than holds up its end of the bargain, a good stern test that won't beat you into submission but demands some good shotmaking if you are going to post a decent score.
The lay of the land gives the course good variety -- hilly and flat holes, doglegs in both directions, water, sporty par 4's that will yield birdies to brutes like the long par 4 3rd that one professional thinks is the hardest hole in the area.
But what makes Radnor Valley really special is its greens. Rather large, slick and undulating, these putting surfaces will test your nerve and skill in maneuvering around a golf course. Members learn quickly that keeping the ball below the hole makes all the difference between a solid round and a disaster. That not only puts pressure on your short game, it also has a huge impact on your decisions regarding approach shots... and that filters all the way back to the tee.
If you are fortunate enough to get an invitation to play there, RSVP with a quick "yes" and then do your homework here:
