Play Day: Golden Oaks
Every Wednesday we profile another place to play. Today our destination is Fleetwood, PA, and Golden Oaks Golf Club.
For those of you in King of Prussia on north... Golden Oaks is just a short jaunt up 422 and 662. For those of us in the southwestern suburbs, it takes a little over an hour to get there, but I'll say this: every time I play Golden Oaks, I am very happy I made the trip.
It is simply one of the more pleasant courses you'll ever visit. It is away from the hustle and bustle... the people are nice... the food is tasty... and the golf course is plenty challenging without beating you into submission. To sum it up, Golden Oaks just feels good. And the price is right. A classic win-win!
Here's my Golden Oaks Scouting Report:
Fees: top out at $65 weekends to $43 weekdays, with savings for seniors, twilight, and 9-holers. Kids play free Mon & Tue after 5pm with a paying adult.
Tees: 5,120 from up front... 6,057 middle... 6,628 back... and 7,106 from the championship tees.
Best Hole: The par 5 18th, where water comes into play on the second and third shots, is an excellent closing hole, but I'm going to choose a par 3 this time. The 9th hole doesn't exactly ease you into the turn, and it is an interesting contrast to the subtle challenges that span the rest of the golf course. This one is from the " in-your-face, let's see what you're made of" school of golf architecture. It is a menacing 214 yards from the back tee (173 from the next set up) and all carry over a pond. The green is large, but there is little room for error. If you have a good round going, you have to dig deep and hit a golfshot to wrap up your solid front nine.
Local Knowledge: This one isn't about a specific hole... it is about timing. Try a twilight round and stay for dinner. This golf course is hard to beat on a nice summer evening, and the food in the restaurant is worth staying for. If you finish with enough daylight left, you can relax and eat on the deck and watch other golfers come in. (note: their Nine & Dine Sun. thru Fri. is just $31.99)
