Play Day: Chesapeake Bay GC at Rising Sun
Every Wednesday we highlight another place to play. Today we head down i95 to just over the Maryland border, and Chesapeake Bay Golf Club at Rising Sun.
They're just a few miles away from each other, but the two courses at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club are worlds apart in what they offer golfers.
While the North East course is a modern design carved out of thick woods and can punish you in spots, the course at Rising Sun is more of a classic layout that challenges you in more subtle ways.
That's not to say it is a walk in the park. Several ponds dot the property and can claim poorly-struck shots. It has some strong par 3 holes, and a closing uphill par 5 that can inflict quite a bit of punishment if you're not prepared to finish strong. The greens are better protected than most public courses of this vintage, evidence that the course was built as a private club (the former Chantilly Manor).
Those greens, in fact, have always been the centerpiece of the layout. They're known for being smooth and quick, with subtle breaks that will test your green-reading skills.
Is Rising Sun better than North East? The answer depends entirely on your taste in golf architecture. But it would be a fun question to debate over beverages and crabcakes in the North East clubhouse, after a morning round at Rising Sun and an afternoon 18 at North East.
