Plans for Cashless Tolls on AC Expressway
By next Memorial Day, when the shore-bound rush resumes, toll booths and plaza may be a thing of the past on the Atlantic City Expressway. But the tolls themselves will still be there.
KYW's John Ostapkovich reports that cashless tolling in this region is in the plans for the new Scudder Falls Bridge, but it looks as if the South Jersey Transportation Authority will beat it to the punch. All it has to do is replace the toll booths (and the toll takers) with machines that read EZ-Pass transponders, and for the non-EZ-Pass crowd, photograph the license plate and send a bill.
It's supposed to save money and speed up traffic. A traveler at the Frank Farley service plaza notes, we're almost there now anyway:
"Those speed tolls, it reads your EZ-Pass and it takes a picture of your license plate, and if you don't have an account that's when you get dinged or fined or whatever."
But on the way back from the Plaza, I was behind a car that simply didn't have a plate. Try photographing that, Big Brother!
