Plans For A New Police Headquarters Listed Under Mayor Nutter's Budget
By Mike Dunn
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Among the items in the fine print of Mayor Nutter's new budget were plans for a brand new, state-of-the-art police headquarters in West Philadelphia.
The mayor is setting aside $9 million in the new budget for design work on a new police headquarters to be constructed at 46th and Market Streets. It'll replace the nearly 50-year old Roundhouse at 8th and Race Streets. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey is thrilled:
"Its no secret that our facilities are in pretty poor condition. This is a way in which we can improve that situation. 4601 Market is going to require a lot of work. But it's a good solid building, and once it's rehabbed, it'll make a good police headquarters."
The site is a now-shuttered insurance building owned by the city. There is no word yet on the full price tag for the new headquarters. The headquarters would also include the city morgue and certain health department offices, and officials would hope to have the project complete in three years.
