Pizza Delivery Man Shot During Robbery In West Philadelphia
By Jim Melwert and Jenn Bernstein
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A pizza delivery driver is shot and critically injured in Overbrook, in what police say appears to be an ambush.
As soon as the pizza delivery man got out of his car and stepped onto the sidewalk around 1 o'clock this morning, he was attacked by two men. Philadelphia police Lt. John Walker says the men tried to grab the pizza and the delivery man's cash, but he tussled with them, and one of those men pulled a gun and shot the delivery man three times. The men then ran south on 63rd street, around the corner into a get away car waiting on Nassau Road.
Lt Walker says it appears this was a set-up.
"We think is a typical phone call to a place to order a pizza, the offenders are basically laying in wait."
The delivery man was taken in critical condition to Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania with gunshot wounds to his legs and chest. Police say they are waiting until his condition improves to interview him.
As for who's behind the robbery, Walker says it appears to be three people, the two men who did the robbery and shooting and the getaway driver. They're looking for witnesses and scouring the area for surveillance video of the men or of the getaway car.
Police say it doesn't appear the suspects got away with anything and detectives will be checking surveillance cameras for clues.
The victim remains at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he underwent surgery this morning.
