Pirates edge Phillies despite Halladay's complete game
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Garrett Jones knocked in the game-winning run and Zach Duke turned in six strong innings to outduel Roy Halladay as Pittsburgh clipped Philadelphia, 2-1, in the back half of a two-game set from Citizens Bank Park.
Duke (3-4) held the NL East leaders to six hits and one run, fanning five with two walks to post his first win in six starts dating back to April 10. Octavio Dotel shut the door in the ninth for his eighth save.
Jones went 3-for-4, while Ryan Doumit collected two hits and Andy LaRoche drove in the other run for the Pirates, who rebounded from a 12-2 defeat on Monday and have won three of five.
Juan Castro knocked in the lone run for the Phillies, who saw a four-game win streak snapped.
Halladay (6-2) dropped his second decision in four starts despite the complete game, yielding nine hits and two runs with six strikeouts.
Lastings Milledge began the Pittsburgh sixth with an infield single to short, then moved up on a groundout. Jones followed by lacing a single to right and despite a strong throw from Phils right-fielder Jayson Werth, Milledge was able to slide under the tag for a 2-1 Pirates lead.
Halladay settled down and retired the next two batters.
Philly loaded the bases with two out in the home half, but Duke induced an inning-ending grounder to third from Ben Francisco.
Halladay then worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth when he got Ryan Church to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The home team, though, went down meekly against Joel Hanrahan and Dotel in their final two at-bats.
Back-to-back doubles from Doumit and LaRoche put the Buccos on the board in the second.
The Phils equalized in the fifth when Castro lined a single with the bases loaded to score Ryan Howard. Werth could have been the go-ahead run, but was thrown out trying to score.
Game Notes
Halladay turned in his fourth complete game of the season and 53rd career distance outing...Phils second baseman Chase Utley missed his second straight game with flu-like symptoms...This was the Pirates' first win in Philadelphia since August 8, 2008.
