Pipe Bomb Scare Prompts Bensalem Bank Evacuation
BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- A device constructed to look like a pipe bomb was left at a bank in Bucks County, Pennsylvania Thursday morning as part of a robbery attempt.
Authorities say the M&T Bank at 1881 Street Road in Bensalem was evacuated just before 9 .a.m. after en employee found a gift wrapped box in a front vestibule of the bank.
According to police, the employee brought the box inside and found a note that indicated there was a bomb inside that could explode remotely. Local authorities were immediately notified and the Philadelphia Bomb Squad and FBI responded to the scene.
Sources say the bomb squad x-rayed the bag and detonated the device that included a pipe and wires. Sources say the items were constructed to look like real pipe bombs, but did not include explosives. The box was left as part of a bank robbery attempt.
As a precaution, four surrounding schools were locked down for about an hour.
No injuries were reported and Bensalem police and the FBI are investigating.
