Pink Slips For 115 NJ Casino Inspectors
(CBS) - Two days after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed legislation aimed at jump starting the casino business down the shore, layoff notices have gone out to most of those now serving as casino inspectors.
One-hundred-fifteen of the 144 inspectors now working for the Casino Control Commission will be out of work on March 25th. That's when their jobs will be taken over by counterparts in the Division of Gaming Enforcement, which will take on the lion's share of the commission's work. The interim period will be used to allow for an orderly transition. Additional cutbacks at the Commission are expected.
The plan here is to save the 11 casinos money, which will be directed into a marketing effort aimed at tourists and investors alike. It's thought state-run districts around the casinos -- paired with better marketing and an easing of regulation -- will allow Atlantic City casinos to better compete with those in neighboring states, particularly Pennsylvania and Delaware.
